Initial Training
  • Initial Training

Initial flying training provides the foundation of ability and understanding of military aviation, to create operational skills to the highest military standards for both pilots and rear crewmen.

Cobham Helicopter Academy’s personnel have provided initial flying training for helicopter pilots and rear crewmen at the UK’s Defence Helicopter Flying School since 1997. Our instructors are all British ex-Military with many years’ operational experience. They have been trained by RAF Central Flying School and EASA to conduct helicopter training.

Trainee pilots are taught elementary handling and demonstrate proficiency in general handling, autorotations, practice forced landings, advanced transitions, sloping ground and quick stops. Trainees are then taught advanced handling skills, instrument flying, night flying, low level flying and navigation.

Trainee rear crewmen are taught to use the correct terminology and checks at the right time and demonstrate proficiency in airmanship, emergencies, general handling, underslung loads, confined area operations, low level navigation and night flying.

Cobham Helicopter Academy offers a range of operational flying training that builds upon the trainee’s initial skills in order to prepare military pilots and rear crewmen, mission commanders and aviation leaders to meet the challenges of carrying out military helicopter operations successfully.

For over 20 years, Cobham Helicopter Academy's personnel have provided this training to the Royal Air Force, British Army and Royal Navy in their preparation for attack, reconnaissance, support and maritime helicopter roles.

Cobham is responsible for establishing and undertaking similar operational flying training for governments worldwide. For example, in 2012 we established maritime border control and counter narcotics helicopter capability in the Caribbean, where crews have since successfully completed thousands of missions.

This unrivalled experience is available to armies, air forces and navies around the world to develop their aircrews' operational flying skills, aviation knowledge and tactical acumen.
